PROVIDENCE – For the second consecutive week and third time this year, freshman midfielder Danielle Gottwik has been tabbed as The American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. In addition, senior defender Gabrielle Charno was named Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore goaltender Emily Armstrong and named to the league’s weekly honor roll after UConn’s 1-0-1 week.
For Gottwik (New Port Richey, Fla.), the honor comes after a three-point performance in Connecticut’s 3-1 win at SMU on Oct. 12. The midfielder scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 34th minute, then assisted on an insurance tally for Rachel Hill (Rollinsford, N.H.) in the 41st. Gottwik is second on the Huskies this year in scoring with 14 points, coming via five goals and four assists.
The honors for Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) and Charno (Seaport, N.Y.) come after the UConn defense held its two opponents to one goal over 200 minutes last week. The Husky back-line stifled Houston and SMU to a mere 13 total shots, with only six on goal over the two contests.
Armstrong played the final 65 minutes in goal during a scoreless draw at Houston and played the second half at SMU, not allowing a goal and making three saves over the two outings. Charno played every minute of the two matches at center back and now leads the Huskies with 1,408 minutes played this season.
The Huskies return to action on Thursday, Oct. 16 when they host South Florida at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Kick-off with the Bulls is set for 7 p.m.
