Women's Soccer Defeats DePaul 2-1

Chicago, Ill. (October  19, 2007) - The University of Connecticut extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over DePaul. The Huskies improve to 11-2-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the BIG EAST. DePaul falls to 4-11-1 and 1-7-0.

Playing on Wish Field in Chicago, which is about 15 feet smaller than most fields, the Huskies gave up the opening goal in the 14th minute, when Shannon Williams got within five yards of the net and was able to punch it in. Playing in front of a hometown crowd, Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) scored the equalizer only four minutes later, intercepting a clearing attempt in the box and putting it past the keeper.

Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) put UConn up for good while scoring on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 26th minute. For the half UConn out shot the Blue Demons 11-4.

In the second half the Huskies had several opportunities, but were unable to make three point blank chances. Karyn Riviere had a wide open shot after faking out the goalie, but sent the ball just wide of the net. Sarah MacIsaac (Bedford, Nova Scotia) and Annie Yi (Indianapolis, Ind.) also had point blank chances that they were unable to put on goal.

"We had many opportunities to put them away," said associate head coach Sarah Barnes. "We'll have to take better advantage of our opportunities Sunday."

In the 87th minute, Eng saved the game from going into overtime. The DePaul attacker was able to flick the ball over goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta), bit Eng made a diving save to prevent the ball from being shot into the open net.

For the game, the Huskies out shot the Blue Demons 21-11. Yi and Eng were tied for the team lead with five shots each. Eng's five shots were all on goal.

The Huskies return to action this Sunday when they play 22nd ranked Notre Dame in a battle of the two current division leaders. Game time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., in South Bend, Ind.   GOALS BY PERIOD...............1        2       Total
