STORRS, Conn. – A three goal performance over the course of two conference games last week helped Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) lock up Offensive Player of the Week honors, as announced by the American Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon. The sophomore earns the honors for the first time in her career after achieving honor roll status in last week’s set of awards.
Ribeiro has been on fire for UConn as of late. In the past four games she has recorded five goals, including two game-winning goals. On Thursday evening against Cincinnati she buried an overtime game-winner just 4:06 into the first extra frame to give UConn a crucial three points with the conference win. On Sunday, Ribeiro proved an even greater offensive threat with two tallies, scoring UConn’s game-tying and go-ahead goals in an eventual 3-2 setback against Louisville. The multi-goal game was the first of her career here at Connecticut.
The Pawtucket native has enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for the Huskies, currently sitting in second place on the roster for total scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Locking up three wins for Connecticut this season, Ribeiro ranks second only to freshman Rachel Hill’s (Rollinsford, N.H.) four game-winners.
Ribeiro’s hot streak arrives at a perfect juncture in UConn’s regular season calendar. The Huskies close out their scheduled games this week with away matchups against AAC opponents Rutgers (October 24th) and Memphis (October 27th). In the first days of November, Connecticut will embark on its inaugural conference championship quest in the first American postseason tournament.
