STORRS, Conn. – The nationally ranked UConn women’s soccer team clinched the American Athletic Conference Regular Season Title after USF lost to UCF Friday. The last time UConn won the regular season was in 2005, when it was still a member of the Big East.

The Huskies defeated Houston Thursday with a dramatic 89th minute goal from senior Samantha McGuire (Fishkill, N.Y.) to earn a 1-0 win. The win moved UConn into first place with 21 conference points, just above USF with 19.

The regular season title was determined by USF’s last conference match-up against rival UCF. If USF had either won or tied, than UConn’s match against SMU on Sunday would have been the determinant game. Since USF lost, UConn knew it had claimed the top spot after last night’s results.

The Huskies currently stand atop the American Athletic Conference leader board with seven conference wins. They have the opportunity to extend their conference record to 8-1 on Sunday Oct. 25 when they take on SMU at Morrone Stadium.
