PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two Huskies grabbed American Athletic Conference weekly awards following the conclusion of the 2016 regular season, as announced by the league Monday. Senior Stephanie Ribeiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) was tabbed Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this year while fellow senior Emily Armstrong (Collegeville, Pa.) was deemed Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time.
The two senior starters helped UConn bring home the 2016 American Athletic Conference regular season title with back-to-back road wins over Cincinnati and East Carolina. The Huskies will also host the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship tournament at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
Ribeiro was selected Offensive Player of the Week after racking up six points, including three goals and both game-winners. She scored UConn’s first goal in the 2-0 shutout at Cincinnati Thursday and took credit for both goals in the 2-1 comeback win at ECU Sunday.
With six points in two games, Ribeiro continues her reign on a national scale, leading the country in total points (49) and game-winning goals (11) and is tied for first in total goals (19). She has scored a goal in the last five consecutive matches.
Armstrong helped the Huskies go 2-0 to close out the regular season, earning her 16th win and ninth shutout of the year. In Thursday’s win over Cincinnati, Armstrong racked up 10 saves, tying her season-best. She also picked up her ninth shutout of the season.
Armstrong added another five saves against ECU Sunday to guide UConn to the 2016 American Athletic Conference regular season title. Heading into the conference championship, Armstrong leads the conference in goals against average with a 0.54 in conference games and a 0.73 overall.
The Huskies will host the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship tournament, beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 2. As the top two seeds, UConn and Memphis both have a bye for the first round and automatically advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4.
