STORRS, CT (November 12) — The University of Connecticut women’s soccer team earned an NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship berth for the 20th consecutive year Monday afternoon as the 64-team field was announced for the 2001 NCAA Tournament.

The Huskies will host Sacred Heart (10-9-0) in the first round on Thursday, November 15, at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with the night’s other first round game, Harvard (10-5-0) against Hartford (15-5-0), to immediately follow. The winners from each game will meet on Saturday, November 17 at noon.

Tickets will be on sale the day of each game at Morrone Stadium. Adult tickets are $7 and all others (senior citizens, college students and youths) will be charged $5.

UConn, 16-5-0 overall, was awarded the eighth seed overall. Only the top eight teams in the country received a seeding, guaranteeing each the home field advantage through at least the first three rounds. The other seeded teams: North Carolina (No. 1), Santa Clara (No. 2), UCLA (No. 3), Portland (No. 4), Stanford (No. 5), Florida (No. 6) and Notre Dame (No. 7).

The BIG EAST Conference led all conferences with eight teams in the tournament. Beside Connecticut and Notre Dame, West Virginia, Miami, Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College and Villanova also made the field. This season marked the first year the NCAA has fielded a 64-team tournament.
