BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Connecticut softball team wrapped up the LSU Tiger Classic with a 4-0 victory over North Florida on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies swept their meetings with the Ospreys during the three-day tournament to improve to 2-3, while UNF drops to 0-5.
Freshman RHP Jill Stockley (2-1) added another triumph to the wins column with a stellar seven-inning effort in which she allowed six hits and picked up two strikeouts. Logan Green was tagged with the loss for the Ospreys after giving up four earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The Huskies broke through in the bottom of the fourth following Lexi Gifford's inning-opening single to the pitcher. Both Jacklyn Dubois and Alyssa Gardea reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for UConn. Coming in as a designated player, rookie Taylor Smith looped a double to right center to get her fellow Huskies across home plate for a 3-0 lead.
Connecticut tacked on one more in the fifth inning, once again beginning with Gifford, who reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. Dubois' grounder allowed Gifford to advance to third and Gardea ripped an RBI single through the right side.
The squad had six players tally hits on the day as the Huskies also put on a strong defensive effort without any errors.
UConn will head to Boca Raton, Fla. for the FAU Tournament on Feb. 19-20. The Huskies will face Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic and Northern Illinois.
