Callahan and the Huskies fall to Providence, 2-1

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UConn softball team fell to 5-3 on the season after a 2-1 loss to Providence at the Florida Atlantic Strike-Out Cancer Tournament. The Huskies have now gone 3-1 in Boca Raton at the tournament, including an 1-0 victory over Northern Illinois early Saturday afternoon.
Despite outhitting the Friars 7-5, UConn could not pull out the victory after leaving eight runners on base. Lauren Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) was the losing pitcher after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing the winning run. Katelyn Callahan (Queensbury, N.Y.) started for the Huskies and threw 3.2 innings and struck out five Friars.
Junior Maddy Schiappa (Bedford, N.H) scored the lone run for the Huskies in the top of the fifth inning off of a single up the middle from sophomore Emily O’Donnell (Niskayuna, N.Y.). Schiappa is currently leading the team with a .483 batting average. Senior Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) was 2-2 at the plate with two singles. Guches is batting .346 for the season.
The Huskies will conclude the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m. when they take on North Florida.
