Softball Falls to Samford, 8-4, on Sunday Morning in Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - Despite a pair of hits from junior OF Alyssa Gardea, the University of Connecticut softball team fell, 8-4, to Samford at Jane B. Moore Field on the final day of the 2015 Wilson/DeMarini Tournament in Auburn, Ala. The Bulldogs improve to 14-4, while the Huskies drop to 4-6.

Senior RHP Lauren Duggan (2-3) took the loss in 7.0 innings, allowing all eight Bulldog runs on 12 hits. Jessi Stone picked up the win in the relief for Samford, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing one run on a pair of hits.

The Bulldogs started the scoring in top of the first inning, grabbing two runs on one hit and taking advantage of a wild pitch. Abby Sweeney pushed across Samford's first run with an RBI single through the left side before Callie Brister scampered home on the errant pitch to bring the score to 2-0.

Samford extended the lead to 4-0 in the second, when Sweeney picked up two more RBIs with a ringing single up the middle.

The Huskies cut into the Bulldog lead in the home half of the fifth, scoring their first run of the afternoon courtesy of a Taylor Townsend RBI single. Junior OF Heather Fyfe delivered the big blow in the frame, crushing a three-run home run to left field to knot the game up at four. For Fyfe, the long ball marked her first homer of the season and fourth of her career.



The Bulldogs answered with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to regain an 8-4 lead. The Huskies couldn't complete the comeback in the seventh and fell, 8-4.

The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Fyfe and Gardea each recorded multi-hit games, combining to go 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.

The squad returns to the diamond on Friday, March 6 when it travels to Stillwater, Okla. to play UMKC in the first of three games at the 2015 Mizuno Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State.
