OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Sophomore infielder Carli Cutler recorded her team-leading fifth multi-hit game on Sunday, as the UConn softball team lost a narrow 4-3 decision to Saint Francis in the final game of the Oklahoma State Hall of Fame Classic.
Freshman pitcher Marybeth Olson picked up nine strikeouts in her complete-game effort, but a three-run rally by the Red Flash in the seventh inning dropped the Huskies (9-15) to 2-3 over the weekend at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex.
For the second straight game, freshman Samantha Barnett posted an RBI single out of the clean-up spot for UConn. Redshirt freshman Olivia Sappington also had an RBI hit, as part of a two-out rally in the third inning.
When UConn led 3-1 in the seventh, Saint Francis put runners on first and second with two outs – getting an RBI single from Sierra McKee and two-run triple from Jordan Frank – eventually taking a 4-3 lead.

Olson turned in a solid effort in her sixth start of the season, striking out nine hitters and walking only two. In the first six innings on Sunday, she allowed just one run in the second frame – giving the Red Flash an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies responded in the third inning, posting an impressive two-out rally that included four-straight hits from Cutler, freshman Reese Guevarra, Sappington and Barnett to take a 2-1 lead. Cutler started the rally with a double, as she has recorded a hit in three of the last four games.
In the fifth inning, Cutler reached on a single and junior Kelli Bates pinch-ran for her at first. Bates stole second base, reached third on a groundout by Guevarra and scored on a fielding error, giving UConn its 3-1 edge at the time.
Olson stranded four runners on base for the Red Flash, while the Huskies left five on base throughout the contest. For the freshman pitcher, it was her third outing this season with at least nine strikeouts.
UConn falls to 3-6 in games decided by one run this season, as the team prepares for a trip to play North Texas on Tuesday afternoon. The spring break road trip continues against the Mean Green with first pitch at 3:30 p.m. ET.
