HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – UConn softball concluded the opening day of the Hofstra Invite with a 1-1 mark after falling to the hosting Pride, 6-5, followed by an 8-6 win over Central Connecticut. The Huskies now sit at 9-7 on the season, while CCSU fell to 8-7.
Connecticut was the first to dot the scoreboard in against the Blue Devils on homerun to left center by senior outfielder Kim Silva to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning the Blue Devils responded with two runs taking a 2-1 advantage after three hits against Lauren Duggan. It didn’t take long for the Huskies to respond as UConn reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth following a two-run outing. The Husky firepower returned as Marissa Guches sent the ball flying over the left field wall to push the Husky lead to 3-2.
The Huskies defense struggled in the bottom of the fifth when the Blue Devils were able to capitalize on an early Husky error, two wild pitches and two hits to tally four runs and move the score to 6-3.
Connecticut’s bats exploded in the final inning as the team registered six hits to come from behind and set the final score at 8-6. The seniors were once again the Husky leader as Silva and Guches each recorded hits in the final inning with Silva knocking in three runners on a double and scoring on Guches’ double to left field. Silva concluded the day with two hits, two runs scored and four RBI.
Freshman Alyson Ambler (2-2) was the winning pitcher after throwing 4.0 innings and only giving up two hits and two earned runs. CCSU’s Laura Messina was the losing pitcher.
The Huskies will conclude the Hofstra Invite on Sunday when they take on Hofstra at 11 a.m. and the Blue Devils at 4 p.m.
