HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Audrey Grinnell lifted the Huskies to a 10-2 win against Central Connecticut in UConn’s final game at the Hofstra Invite as she registered two homeruns and totaled five RBI. Connecticut improved to 10-8 and finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark, while CCSU fell to 8-9.
The Blue Devils were first to reach home plate on Sunday afternoon as Nicole Springer sent the ball flying over the left field wall against Kiki Saveriano to give her squad a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Huskies, who outhit the Blue Devils 15-6, quickly responded with back-to-back doubles in the first inning by Emily O’Donnell and Kim Silva as UConn evened the score at 1-1 with O’Donnell scoring and Silva being credited with a RBI.
In the second inning, Grinnell registered her second homerun of the season as she had a two-run homer to the left side to give the Huskies a 3-1 advantage.
Marissa Guches hit a two-RBI single up the middle to jumpstart a five-run third inning giving the Huskies a 8-1 lead. O’Donnell and Silva each scored on the play. Guches owns a team-best 14 RBI on the season. Grinnell hit her second homerun of the game with a three-run blast to left center.
With a 9-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth inning the Huskies were able to solidify the 10-2 victory following a RBI double to left center by Silva. Silva led the Huskies as she went 4-4 on the afternoon scoring one run and recording two RBI.
Saveriano improved to 7-2 on the season after throwing a complete game allowing six hits and only two earned runs, while Nicole Springer fell to 3-2 on the season.
Connecticut returns to action on Tuesday, March 19 when they play Sacred Heart at 2:30 p.m.
