FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The UConn softball team blanked Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory in eight innings. The Huskies now sport an 11-10 mark, while the Pioneers fall to 12-9 on the season.
It was a pitcher’s duel in Fairfield on Saturday which resulted in Kiki Saveriano earning her second shutout of the season as she improved to 8-3 on the season. Nicole Sidor was the losing pitcher after allowing five hits and one earned run.
UConn and Sacred Heart battled back-and-forth on Sunday afternoon as the team went into extra innings after seven innings at a 0-0 standstill. The two teams totaled nine hits as the Huskies outhit the Pioneers 5-4.
Maddy Schiappa reached second base with two outs against the Huskies in the top of the eighth following a single and stealing second. She reached home on a RBI-double by sophomore Emily O’Donnell to win the game.
Saveriano totaled seven strikeouts on Sunday but it was her stellar performance in the bottom of the eighth which lifted the Huskies to victory. With the tying run on third and no outs, Saveriano forced the Sacred Heart batters into two ground outs to the pitcher and a strikeout ending the contest in a 1-0 Husky win.
The Huskies will host their home opener on Wednesday when UConn welcomes Quinnipiac for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
