MEMPHIS – The University of Connecticut softball team handed Memphis its first loss in American Athletic Conference action with a 6-0 shutout on Friday, March 25 at Tigers Softball Complex in Memphis, Tenn.
Junior RHP Kayla Doty (3-1) shined with her third complete-game victory of the season, allowing five hits and one walk. Christian Novak (1-2) notched the loss after only 1.1 innings of work, surrendering two runs and four hits.
With two outs in the opening frame, Lexi Gifford singled up the middle before stealing her seventh bag of the season to get in scoring position. Alyson Ambler looped a double to right field to bring Gifford in for an early 1-0 edge.
After ending the home half of the first inning on a double play, the Huskies kept the momentum going in the second as Jacklyn Dubois singled to center field and Ally Hernandez took a pitch to the left elbow for a pair of runners. Alyssa Gardea loaded the bases on a single to third before Taylor Townsend showed a good eye to earn a walk and put UConn up 2-0.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the fifth with runners on the corners but UConn came up with the double play to close the inning and keep the home team scoreless.
After stacking the bags in the sixth, the Huskies broke things open on a three-run double from Gifford, followed by a RBI single up the middle by Ambler to go ahead 6-0.
Ambler and Gifford combined for five hits and five of UConn’s six RBIs, including an extra-base hit for both.
The Huskies will conclude its three-game series with the Tigers on Saturday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
