HAMDEN, Conn. – The UConn softball team improved to 12-10 on the season following a 6-1 victory at Quinnipiac on Tuesday afternoon, while the Bobcats fall to 5-18 with the loss.
The Huskies had a strong offensive showing with freshman third baseman Lexi Gifford guiding the team as she went 3-for-4 at the plate en route to the Huskies totaling 13 hits.
Senior hurler Kiki Saveriano added another win to her resume improving to 9-3 on the season following seven innings, allowing only four Bobcat hits and no earned runs.
Trailing 1-0, the Huskies tallied two runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run homer to left center by sophomore shortstop Emily O’Donnell. Also scoring on the homerun was Maddy Schiappa who reached first on a fielder’s choice.
UConn pushed its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth on three hits.The Huskies added two final runs in the sixth on four hits with Audrey Grinnell and Lauren Duggan each registering a RBI and setting the final score at 6-1.
Connecticut hosts its home opener on Wednesday when they welcome the Bobcats to Storrs. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
