MEMPHIS – The University of Connecticut softball team closed out its three-game series against American Athletic Conference foe Memphis with a 2-1 loss on Saturday, March 26 at Tigers Softball Complex in Memphis, Tenn. With the setback, the Huskies drop to 11-20 overall and 1-2 in The American, while the Tigers improve to 18-17 and 2-1 in league play.
Junior righty Kayla Doty (3-2) took the ball for her seventh start and was charged with the loss despite allowing just two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Memphis ace Molly Smith (6-6) picked up the win with a complete-game, four-hit, one-run effort.
Neither team could get its offense going through the first two innings, as the teams combined for just four hits through the first four frames. Memphis broke through in the bottom of the third after Brooke Lee delivered a big blow, ripping a two-run homer to right field.
The Huskies struck back in the fifth with two outs after Alyssa Gardea singled to the pitcher and made her way around the bases on a throwing error for the final 2-1 tally.
In the setback, freshman Ally Hernandez extended her team-best reached-base streak to nine-straight games.
The Huskies will host a doubleheader against Bryant University on Wednesday, March 30 for its home opener at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
