STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's softball squad swept a double-header with Sacred Heart today in Storrs by scores of 8-4 and 15-9. With the sweep, UConn improved to 12-11 while Sacred Heart dropped to 10-16. Marissa Guchesfinished the day 7-for-8 with six RBI.
Freshman Lauren Dugganearned the victory to improve to 4-4 on the season pitching four innings and allowing four runs, two earned.
Ali Adelmanearned the save with three innings of scoreless relief.
The Huskies took game one of the double-header, 8-4. Marissa Guches finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Emily O'Donnell finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Andrea Huelsenbeckfinished game one with two RBI on two hits.
Connecticut took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Duclos, scoring Jen Ward who reached on an error to start the inning. Huelsenbeck knocked home Marissa Gucheswith an RBI single to make it 2-0.
With the Huskies up 3-2 after a homerun to right center by Emily O'Donnellin the bottom of the third, Connecticut exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
O'Donnell hit an RBI single to plate Amy DeLucato make it 4-2. Guches later blasted a three-run homerun followed by a RBI double by Huelsenbeck to finish the scoring in the fourth.
Sacred Heart added two runs in the top of the fifth but the Ali Adelmancame on to earn the save with three scoreless innings, striking out four.
Game two saw the Huskies light up the board for 15 runs, fueled by a five-run second and a nine-run fourth.
Guches finished 4-for-4 with three RBI with Amy Vaugh and Amy DeLucaplating three and four runs, respectively.
Katelyn Callahanstarted for UConn and allowed two runs in the top of the second.
The UConn offense responded with five in the bottom of the inning. Duclos scored on a balk with the bases loaded for the first UConn run of the game. DeLuca followed with a 2-RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-2. Guches and Vaughan followed with RBI singles to put UConn up 5-2.
Sacred Heart had a five-run fourth, chasing Callahan after 3.2 innings pitches and seven runs, just two earned.
Adelman came on to earn the victory with 3.1 innings of one-hit ball.
The Huskies responded in the bottom of the fourth with a nine-run explosion, highlighted by a two-run homer by Vaughan and two-RBI double by DeLuca to center.
Sacred Heart added two in the sixth with UConn finishing the scoring with a homerun to left by Audrey Grinnellin the bottom half of the inning to close the scoring at 15-9.
UConn will remain at home tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in Storrs when they take on Boston University.
