PISCATAWAY, N.J. – UConn softball split its BIG EAST doubleheader opener at Rutgers on Friday afternoon to move to 13-12 on the season and 1-1 in league action. The Huskies blanked the Scarlet Knights (17-12, 2-3 BE) in the opening game by a score of 4-0 before falling 10-2 in the second contest.
Senior righty Kiki Saveriano continued to be UConn’s leading pitcher as she improved to 10-3 after recording her third shutout of the 2013 campaign. Saveriano faced 30 batters and allowed only nine hits and struck out four.
In the first game, the Huskies and Scarlet Knights were set in a scoreless game until UConn exploded in the sixth inning registering five hits and scoring four runs to secure a victory. Emily O’Donnell, Lauren Duggan, Audrey Grinnell and Brittany Duclos all crossed home plate in the exciting sixth inning.
Despite taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second contest, the Huskies fell 10-2 in five innings as four Huskies saw action in the circle during the seven innings. Connecticut, outhit 22-11 on the day, allowed Rutgers to tally 13 hits against the four Huskies. Duggan was handed the loss and is now 1-4 overall.
Marissa Guches notched two RBI in the game following a single to right field that allowed O’Donnell and Maddy Schiappa to score. Guches now has a team-high 16 RBI in her senior campaign and Schiappa owns team-bests of 32 hits and 13 runs scored.
The Huskies will conclude the three-game conference series on Saturday with the first pitch set for noon.
