STORRS, Conn. – The Huskies stretched their home win streak to five as they downed conference foe Villanova by a score of 4-1 to improve to 15-14 and 4-3 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats boast an impressive 25-10 overall mark but have yet to win a conference game posting a 0-4 mark.
Junior hurler Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) continued to dominant the mound giving up only three hits, one unearned run in her seven innings. Saveriano (10-7) moved into fourth place in UConn’s all-time record book for career starts as she has thrown the first pitch 79 times in her three-year career.
First baseman Audrey Grinnell led the squad with two hits. The Saco, Maine native pushed the Husky lead to two in the bottom of the third with her one-run bomb over the left field wall against losing pitcher Caitlyn Delahaba.
Villanova tallied its lone run of the game following a Husky error in the top of the fifth. The Wildcat runner would reach home from first base on a RBI triple by Tessa Braga.
Grinnell added a double in the fifth inning and then would score on a RBI single by freshman Emily O’Donnell (Niskayuna, N.Y.). O’Donnell scored from third to set the game at 4-1 after senior Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) had her 30th RBI of the season with a single to left field.
Connecticut concluded Friday afternoon outhitting Villanova, 8-3, but committed three errors in the field while the Wildcats did not have an error on the day.
The Huskies will conclude their three-game conference matchup with the Wildcats on Saturday, April 7 at noon with a doubleheader at the Burrill Family Field in Storrs.
