STORRS, Conn.- The UConn softball team is now 16-16 on the season and 3-5 in the BIG EAST following Wednesday’s doubleheader against Georgetown (15-25, 5-5 BE) where the league opponents split the two games. The Hoyas earned a 7-3 win over the Huskies in the opening game followed by a 4-3 UConn victory.
Connecticut had two homers in the midweek league games with freshman Jacklyn Dubois registering her second career homerun in the first game and Marissa Guches hitting one out of the fence in the second. Guches is currently third on the team with three homeruns in 2013.
In the first game, the Huskies were holding onto a 1-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning when the Hoyas’ firepower took over recording six hits and seven runs. Senior Kiki Saveriano (11-7) was the losing pitcher after her 14th complete game of the season where the Hoyas finished with 10 hits and five earned runs.
The Huskies wasted no time getting their bats moving in the second game where they outhit Georgetown 5-4 and took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Huskies earned their three first-inning runs when Lexi Gifford and Emily O’Donnell each walked followed by a three-run homer by Guches.
Guches added a fourth RBI for the game on an infield single with Maddy Schiappa scoring and giving UConn a 4-0 lead. Guches currently leads the team with 25 RBI.
Lauren Duggan (3-4) was the UConn winning pitcher after six innings, only three hits and two runs. Katelyn Callahan earned the save after replacing Duggan in the seventh inning as the Hoyas scored two runs. Callahan would hold off the Georgetown comeback with the Huskies taking a 4-3 win.
The Huskies will head to intrastate opponent Hartford for a 4 p.m. contest on Thursday.
