Guches records three RBI to lift Huskies to 5-2 win

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut softball team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to earn a 5-2 win Thursday at Burrill Family Field. For the Huskies, the win improved their season record to 19-20. Connecticut has won two straight after coming off four consecutive losses last week.

The Bulldogs grabbed two quick runs off Connecticut starter Kiki Saveriano in the top of the first, headlined by a run scoring double from DH Elle Madsen. Saveriano settled down after a tough start and finished with a line of four innings pitched, two hits, two earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts to earn the win. Saveriano is now 12-10 on the season.

The Huskies answered in the bottom of the second with four runs of their own. Audrey Grinnell led off the inning by blasting her team-leading sixth homerun of the season to deep right center field. Bryant’s Jennifer Jacob then issued three consecutive free passes to load the bases for pinch-hitter Marissa Guches. Guches ripped a double sharply down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.

The Huskies never looked back, picking up another run in the fourth inning when Valerie Sadowl grounded out to second base, allowing Brittany Duclos to score.

The Bulldogs threatened in the seventh inning, getting two quick base runners but failed to move them any farther. Katelyn Callahan worked three effective innings giving up just two hits and walking three in 14 batters faced.

On the afternoon, Connecticut recorded seven hits. The Huskies have now outhit opponents by a margin of 299-278 in 39 games played this season. Junior Maddy Schiappa has led the charge for Connecticut, collecting 51 hits this season, which has helped to earn her an impressive .342 batting average.



The Huskies are back in action against St. John’s in a doubleheader this Saturday, April 20th now scheduled to begin at 2 pm in Storrs.
