Huelsenbeck leads the Huskies with two hits.
April 22, 2012
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Huskies dropped an 1-0 decision at BIG EAST foe Pitt in their second pitching duel in as many days. The two squads totaled only 14 hits as Husky junior hurler Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) and Pitt’s Savannah King battled for the second time in this three-game series. The Huskies fall to 21-20 (9-8 BIG EAST) and the Panthers improve to 25-22 and 8-11 Big East after taking two of the three games.
The Huskies stranded 10 on base and in the fourth UConn was unable to capitalize on a Panther error that advanced freshman catcher Andrea Huelsenbeck (Rockaway, N.J.) to third. Junior second baseman Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) led the team with two hits and Huelsenbeck was one of four Huskies to tally one hit on the afternoon.
The Panthers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on one hit and a Husky error. Connecticut was unable to register a run in the top of the seventh to end the game with a Pitt advantage, 1-0.
King was awarded the victory as Saveriano fell to 13-11 on the season.
The Huskies have a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 25, beginning at 1 p.m. at St. John’s.
