STORRS, Conn. - UConn softball split its final regular season doubleheader on Saturday against DePaul in Storrs. The Huskies had a comeback extra-inning win over DePaul before falling 5-4 in the second game of the afternoon. Connecticut remains at .500 as they now sit at 26-26 (8-13 BIG EAST), while DePaul owns a 30-20 (15-6 BE) record.
The Huskies will close the regular season at home on Sunday as they wrap-up the three-game series against DePaul with the first pitch scheduled for noon. Fans are encouraged to arrive to Burrill Field early as Connecticut will honor six seniors prior to the start of the game.
UConn 3, DePaul 2
The first game was a defensive battle with the Huskies' bats coming alive in the seventh inning and the home team earning a 3-2 victory in eight innings. Connecticut outhit the Blue Demons 8-6 in the opening contest as DePaul committed three errors.
Losing pitcher Kirsten Verdun (21-12) held the Huskies to just two hits in the first five innings while striking out 10 Huskies. Senior Kiki Saveriano improved to 16-2 on the season after throwing eight innings and striking out four batters.
The Huskies entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 2-0 but were able to even the score when the UConn freshmen stepped up for the team with Valerie Sadowl and Alyssa Gardea each registering hits. It was veterans Audrey Grinnell and Brittany Duclos crossing home plate in the inning with Duclos earning the RBI on Grinnell's score.
Senior Kim Silva kicked off the eighth inning with a single and reached third following a fielding error by DePaul's left fielder. DePaul intentionally loaded the bases before first baseman Mary Connolly had an error at first allowing Silva to score the winning run. Silva, Emily O'Donnell and Gardea led the team with two hits apiece.

Once again, DePaul was the first to dot the scoreboard opening the second contest on back-to-back doubles earning a run in the first and tacking on two more in the second to take a 3-0 advantage.
Connecticut was quick to respond earning three runs on four hits and a Blue Demon error in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 3-3. Marissa Guches and Jacklyn Dubois each scored on a single to right center by Lexi Gifford. Gifford scored the final run of the inning following an infield single by Sadowl.
The stout Husky defense forced DePaul to strand 11 runners on the bags, including escaping the fourth and fifth innings with the bases loaded for the Blue Demons.
UConn went into the bottom of the sixth inning down 5-3 and added its final run of the contest on an RBI-single by Maddy Schiappa. The Huskies threatened to come back for the second time of the day but the team was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh despite the bases being loaded.
Lauren Duggan was handed the loss and falls to 6-6, while Connolly was the winning pitcher (1-1) and Morgan Maize earned her first save for the Blue Demons.
