ORLANDO -- Despite allowing just three hits, the University of Connecticut softball team fell, 1-0, to second-seeded Tulsa on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament played at UCF Softball Complex. UConn concludes its 2015 season at 18-35, while the Golden Hurricane advance to play Houston in Friday's semifinal.
Freshman righty Chelsea Eckert (6-15) pitched masterfully in the setback, allowing just two hits in 6.0 innings of one-run ball. Caitlin Sill evened her season record at 10-10 with a complete game effort.
The Golden Hurricane scored the game's first run in the fifth. After Jodi Edminston picked up Tulsa's first hit of the afternoon, Maggie Withee followed with a single down the line. Later in the frame, catcher Erica Sampson lifted a fly ball that was deep enough to plate Edminston on a close play at home.
The Huskies' first threat of the game came in the second inning when Alyson Ambler opened the frame with a single. Alaina Montgomery came on as a pinch runner and moved to second when Alyssa Gardea dropped a sac bunt but Sill was able to work out of the jam by inducing a flyout and an inning-ending foul out.
In the fourth, junior SS Lexi Gifford dropped a bunt single and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error but the Huskies couldn't capitalize as Sill work a pair of strikeouts and a popout. The Huskies kept the deficit at one in the sixth with a nifty 1-4-5 double play.
The game marked UConn's 18th one-run game of the season. The Huskies also finished the 2015 season with a single-season program record 129 walks. The contest also marked the final contest for seniors Lauren Tremblay, Lauren Duggan, Emily O'Donnell and Ashley LaPenta, who helped the program notch 78 wins over the last four seasons.
