STORRS, Conn. – With the 2016 season set to begin on Feb. 12, the University of Connecticut softball team will open the preseason on Friday, holding its first team practice at the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center/University of Connecticut Battling and Pitching Facility.

The Huskies will have two practices, with the first spanning two hours beginning at 9 a.m. and the second starting at 5 p.m. The squad will hit the turf to take part in agility, throwing and situational drills before heading over to the batting cages behind J.O. Christian field. The spring practice marks the second under head coach Jen McIntyre, who assumed the position in the summer of 2014.

“We are very excited to get started this spring with our team,” McIntyre said. “I feel like it is the night before the first day of school where you just can’t wait to get going. They have worked extremely hard in the offseason so as we prepare in the next four weeks, we will lean on our fundamentals as we continue to push forward. We have a very challenging schedule ahead that will only prepare us for our conference season. The next phase of our season is where we simply dig in and get to work every day. We are not starting over, we are continuing to build upon the previous three phases of our season. I am anxious to get out there and get after it tomorrow!”

UConn returns 12 letterwinners from a season ago and welcomed five newcomers to the team during the fall season.

In all, the Huskies return 77.4 percent of the total runs, 77.6 percent of the hits, 71.4 percent of doubles, 74.0 percent of the homeruns and 70.4 percent of the RBIs from a team that hit .237 during last season’s campaign. Additionally, UConn will have plenty of experience and leadership on this year’s squad with 10 upperclassmen, including six seniors.

The Huskies have a challenging non-conference slate that features eight games against five different teams that qualified for the 2015 NCAA Tournament and also four contests against teams that finished the 2015 season ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25.
