FULL AMERICAN RELEASE
STORRS, Conn. – With the 2017 season less than one month away, the UConn softball team was chosen to finish in sixth place in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Tulsa, the defending AAC champion, was voted atop the poll with 34 points and four first-place votes. USF was second with 32 points and three first-place votes, while UCF finished third with 26 points.
The Huskies, led by third-year head coach Jen McIntyre, received 11 points – three more than East Carolina, which was selected to finish last.
Coming off a 19-33 (4-12 American) season, UConn looks to eight incoming freshmen to make an immediate impact beginning on Feb. 10 in the FGCU Softball Tournament. It is the first of six non-conference tournaments to start the season for the Huskies.
The return of seniors Kayla Doty, Valerie Sadowl and Taylor Townsend will add leadership for McIntyre’s squad, while the return of the entire pitching staff – plus more arms with the freshmen – will add to UConn’s pitching options.
Over spring break, the Huskies take their trademark trip of the season when they play in the Stanford Invitational from March 11-12 in Palo Alto, Calif. – followed by a six-day stay in Honolulu for the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
The first home game of the season is scheduled for March 22 against UMass-Lowell, while the opening series of American Athletic Conference play is at home against USF from March 31-April 2.
All home games are played at the Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn. Any news-related items for UConn softball throughout the season can be followed on @UConnSoftball on Twitter.
