STORRS, Conn. – On Friday, University of Connecticut softball head coach Jen McIntyre announced that Emily O’Donnell, Ashley LaPenta, Alyssa Gardea, Alyson Ambler, and Heather Fyfe will serve as team captains for the 2015 campaign. The Huskies are set to begin play on Feb. 20 when they challenge NIU in Troy, Ala. as part of the Trojan Classic.
O’Donnell, who will serve as the Game Day Captain, was one of three Huskies to start all 51 games in 2014. Her .288 batting average ranked second on the team and she amassed a team-best 45 hits in 156 at-bats. A solid defensive presence at third base, the senior held a .923 fielding percentage and finished with 63 putouts a year ago. Her 934 assists marked the seventh-highest total in the American Athletic Conference. Additionally, she was one of six Husky players to record multiple home runs (2) and ended her junior campaign with the second-most total bases (57) of any UConn player.
LaPenta was tabbed as the Dugout Captain after appearing in 22 games with three starts as a junior in 2014. The Bristol, Conn. native was one of the Huskies’ most consistent pinch-runners, scoring five runs, and was one of seven Huskies to record at least one stolen base. At second base, LaPenta notched eight assists and a pair of putouts to go along with a perfect 1.000 field percentage.
Gardea earns the Practice Captain honor after seeing time in 42 games with 32 starts in center field. Defensively, she recorded 58 putouts and notched five assists throughout the season. At the dish, she led the squad with a pair of triples, scoring 14 runs and tallying 14 hits in 81 at-bats as a sophomore.
Ambler, who will serve as the Locker Room/ Travel Captain, was one of four Huskies to make an appearance on the mound last season. In total, she appeared in 21 games, including one start, ending the season with a team-best 4.30 ERA in 40.2 innings of work. The Walla Walla, Wash. native earned her first win of the year in Connecticut’s 4-2 victory over UMass on April 24. At the plate, she concluded the season with a.202 batting average, tallying 23 hits and scoring 16 runs. Her 17 RBIs marked the third-highest total on the team, while her three long balls also tied for third.
Fyfe was tabbed as the Off Field Captain after earning the starting left field assignment 26 times as a sophomore. She exploded for the first three home runs of her career over a 17-day span, recording her first round-tripper against Hartford on April 16 in a five-RBI afternoon and earning a spot on the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll. Her .254 season batting average was fourth on the team and she also notched five multi-RBI games.
The five captains will serve together as part of the Husky leadership council.
