Facilities Investment Together

Feb. 8, 2017

Dear UConn Fan,

All of us associated with UConn Athletics express our sincere thanks for everything you do to support the Husky teams. We look forward to the coming 2017-18 seasons and the dynamic successes and prideful moments we know are ahead.

We hope you share our excitement in the hiring of Randy Edsall to head the football program. He brings passion, vision and leadership and rejoins a team of coaches and staff dedicated to excellence that loyal donors and fans have come to expect.

As we strive for greatness across all of our varsity sports, facility enhancement is critical in attracting outstanding student-athletes and winning championships. While we have extraordinary on-campus practice and training facilities for football (The Burton Family Football Complex and Mark R. Shenkman Training Center) and for basketball (Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center), we urgently need to build new competition and practice venues for soccer, baseball and softball. Our success, tradition and commitment to excellence demand it.

Architects are engaged in the project design with an estimated cost for the athletics complex of $46 million. To date, $15 million has been committed to the projects and we continue to seek private contributions pursuing a $25 million philanthropic goal.

However, to begin construction of state of the art facilities in the spring of 2018, we need everyone in UConn Nation to participate and invest. Beginning with the 2017-18 sport seasons, we have established a new and modest F.I.T. (Facilities Investment Together) fee on all Husky athletic tickets.

There will be a $5 surcharge on every football ticket, $2 for each men’s ice hockey and men’s/women’s basketball ticket and $1 for each men’s/women’s soccer ticket. The F.I.T. fee will be applicable to season, mini-plan and single-game purchases, but no assessment for UConn student tickets.

The UConn Board of Trustees approved this funding strategy in January 2016. However, I did not feel comfortable implementing it without providing everyone advance notice, prior to making a decision to purchase season tickets.

We greatly appreciate your support of the vision to provide all of our student-athletes with a world-class experience.
