Feb. 10, 2016

STORRS, Conn. – On Wednesday, University of Connecticut head coach Jen McIntyre announced that Dominique Pinto, Lexi Gifford, Kayla Doty, Alyson Ambler and Heather Fyfe will serve as team captains for the 2016 campaign. The Huskies are set to begin play on Feb. 12 when they take on Pacific in Baton Rouge, La. as part of the LSU Tiger Classic.

“I am very excited that Heather, Dominique, Kayla, Lexi, and Alyson have been chosen to represent our team as captains this year,” McIntyre said. “As we continue to push forward, it is essential that we have quality leadership from within our program. Our captains hold teammates accountable to the standards set forth for UConn softball. When we sat down and looked at all of the things that a captain could be in charge of, we felt it was best to break it up into more specific and manageable pieces. Each captain is responsible for certain areas of our program as well as upholding the work ethic that has come to define our program. I am looking forward to helping develop our leaders as we compete throughout the 2016 campaign.”

Pinto, who will serve as the Game Day Captain, was one of three Huskies that played in all 53 games in 2015. The junior recorded 314 putouts and 12 assists with a .967 fielding percentage throughout the season. At the dish, she delivered five homeruns and 29 hits along with 17 runs batted in. Pinto lifted a walk-off two-run homerun against UMass on Apr. 30.

Gifford is the only player to start in every game last season and will be acting as the Practice Captain. The shortstop led the squad with 28 runs and a second-best 42 hits. Additionally, she was one of six Husky players to record multiple home runs (2) and had a team-high five stolen bases. Her .269 batting average ranked third on the team and is the second-highest average among returning players.

Doty was tabbed as the Off Field Captain after appearing in 19 games with 10 starts on the mound as a sophomore in 2015.  The Ghent, N.Y. native was one of four players that pitched for UConn last season, compiling a 5.58 ERA in 57.2 innings of work. She struck out 37 batters and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning with a season-best seven punch-outs on the road against Albany on Apr. 1.

Ambler, who will serve as the Locker Room/Travel Captain, appeared in all 53 of the Huskies' games, making 52 starts. She notched 34 hits and ranked second on the team with five home runs. The Walla Walla, Wash. native finished the season with a .241 batting average and ranked fifth on the team with 19 runs scored. She also appeared on the mound in five games, compiling a pair of strikeouts in 7.2 innings of relief. Ambler was selected to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll on Feb. 26 after launching two homers and notching six RBI during the week.

Fyfe was chosen as the Dugout Captain after seeing time in 36 games with 25 starts. She hit .203 with 16 hits, including a homer against Sanford on Mar. 1. The senior outfielder finished the year with 20 total bases and handled all 22 chances in the field without an error. She recorded three hits in UConn’s regular season series finale against Tulsa on May 2-3.

The five captains will serve together as part of the Husky leadership council.
