STORRS, Conn. -
Snow might have cancelled the opening series in Fort Myers, but a clear forecast this week means UConn softball will begin the 2017 season in the UTC Chattanooga Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.

The Huskies will travel to play four total games against IUPUI, Tennessee Tech and Chattanooga - the tournament host - at Frost Stadium on the Chattanooga campus. Live stats will be available, as will updates on @UConnSoftball on Twitter.

Saturday's doubleheader will be at 11 a.m. (ET) and 4 p.m. (ET), against IUPUI and Tennessee Tech respectively. On Sunday, UConn plays IUPUI at 9 a.m. (ET) and Chattanooga at 11:30 a.m. (ET).

Under the direction of third-year head coach Jen McIntyre, UConn welcomes eight freshmen to the team this season with the difficult task of filling in for five departed seniors, who accounted for 56-percent of both hits and RBI in 2016.

Headlined by first-year pitchers Carli Cutler and Katie Koshes, the Husky pitching staff has five strong options going into the season. Sophomore Jill Stockley returns as UConn's leader in innings (142.2), wins (9) and strikeouts (78) from a year ago.

Senior infielder Taylor Townsend is the leading returner in hits (23) and run production (15 RBI), while sophomore outfielder Ally Hernandez hit a team-high .333 in 35 games as a freshman.

UConn is 2-2 all-time against Chattanooga and 0-2 against Tennessee Tech. The Huskies have not played IUPUI prior to this weekend.

QUICK HITS ON OPPONENTS

IUPUI (0-5) lost all five games in the last week's Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. It is coming off a 20-35 (4-12 Summit) season in 2016, finishing runner-up in the Summit League.

Tennessee Tech (0-5) also dropped its first five games, playing in the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga. One loss was a 10-0 defeat to No. 15 Tennessee. The Golden Eagles were 23-33 (14-13 OVC) last season in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Chattanooga (2-3) earned wins over Morgan State and Fairleigh Dickinson last week in the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla. The Mocs were 30-29 (7-11 Southern) in the Southern Conference in 2016 and return five seniors this season.

COMING UP NEXT...

UConn plays in the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. on Feb. 24 and 25. The Huskies will play No. 22 Kentucky, Florida Atlantic (receiving votes in NFCA Coaches Poll), Florida A&M and Arkansas.
