    STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut softball team returns to action this weekend when they return to Florida for the FAU Strike-out Cancer Tournament. The Huskies are slated to open the weekend against Towson on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a contest against the hosting Owls at 8 p.m. UConn will play Northern Illinois and Providence on Saturday and conclude the weekend with a game against North Florida on Sunday morning.

    The University of Connecticut softball team opened the 2011 season today, playing two games in the Florida Atlantic University Tournament.

    Huskies Mercy Rule Providence; Split Double Header
    Connecticut softball split a double header with Providence College today at Burrill Family Field in Storrs. UConn dropped the first game in eight innings, 4-3, before applying the mercy rule to the Friars in game two, 10-0.

    The Huskies went 2-2 in their opening weekend at Florida International’s tournament where they split with Binghamton, fell to FIU and defeated Morehead State. Connecticut was led by junior outfielder Maddy Schiappa who went 9-for-14 at the plate over four games totaling a .643 batting average.

    The Husky coaching staff wasted no time getting freshman Alyson Ambler acclimated to collegiate softball as she appeared in the circle three times opening weekend registering a 1-1 record with four earned runs allowed and nine strike outs. Also earning a victory in Miami was senior hurler Kiki Saveriano who is now 1-0 on the season.
