SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of Connecticut softball team will participate in its third regular season tournament when it travels to California to do battle in the SCU Invitational on Feb. 26-28. The squad opens play with a pair of games on Friday, Feb. 26 against Nevada-Reno (2 p.m. ET) and Illinois-Chicago (4 p.m. ET) before challenging the Nevada-Reno (1 p.m. ET) and host Santa Clara (5:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday. The Huskies complete the weekend with a 12 p.m. rematch with Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, Mar. 28.
UConn (3-6) won one of four games at the 2016 FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., played on Feb. 19-20. Senior 2B Valerie Sadowl hit .400 with four hits and a run over the weekend. Freshman righty Jill Stockley went 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA and delivered eight strikeouts in 13 innings in the circle to grab a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll.
The tournament will mark the second-straight year the Huskies have made the trip to California, after participating in the 2015 San Diego Classic II. Overall, Connecticut has a 13-17 record when playing in the Golden State.
Friday’s contest against the Wolf Pack will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Huskies are 0-3 all-time against the Flames, with the last meeting coming in 2000. UConn and Santa Clara haven’t faced off since the 2007 season and the Huskies sport a 3-0 record against Broncos.
Through nine games, five Huskies are hitting above .270, led by senior OF Alyssa Gardea (.375). Gardea also leads the team with nine hits, while Stockley has picked up all three of UConn’s victories in four complete games.
On the national scale, Stockley ranks 38th in the country and second in the conference with a 0.72 ERA.
