Connecticut Softball Beats Ohio State

MIAMI, Fla. (March 3) -- Senior Megan Biddle (Bear, Del.) drilled her second home run of the year to lead the University of Connecticut softball team to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State late Saturday night at the 2001 Golden Panther Invitational in Miami, Fla.

With the game running past midnight and no hits after four innings of play, Biddle's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth set, refueled the Huskies to get out in front. Junior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, Mass.) followed in the batting lineup, receiving a walk and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt provided by freshman Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.). Girolamo scored UConn's second run of the night, after sophomore Barb Cook (Conklin, N.Y.) hammered the ball into deep centerfield for an RBI double.

Down 2-0, the Buckeyes tried to make a comeback in the top of the seventh with an RBI single, which sent OSU catcher Stacy Roth to the plate, but it would not be enough with the next at-bat a grounded out to Girolamo at second.

Biddle, who also shared time in the pitching circle, had a complete game allowing only one run and striking out six. She improves her record to 2-1 for the season.

Connecticut goes to 4-5 overall, while Ohio State drops to 9-6. The Huskies, who went 2-2 in the tournament, will face Wichita State tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the consolation game.
