UConn 3, Florida A&M 1 ,
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 8, 2006) - On the strength of five doubles, the University of Connecticut softball team defeated Florida A&M, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Lady Rattler Field. The Huskies improve to 3-5 with the win while Florida A&M falls to 6-11 on the season.
UConn got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning. Two consecutive doubles by senior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) and sophomore Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.) put the Huskies up 1-0, and a single by junior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) later in the inning knocked in Keeton to increase the lead to two runs.
It took just one more inning before the Huskies increased their advantage to three, as freshman Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) doubled in fellow freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) who had also doubled to left field to open the half-inning. UConn's fifth double of the game came off the bat of sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) in the top of the sixth inning, but she was stranded at third to close out the inning.
The Lady Rattler's scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Lisa Dronkers scored following a walk and two singles.
Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Huskies, scattering three hits over seven innings and striking out five batters. Destiny Gorton took the loss for Florida A&M.
The Huskies are in action next on Friday, March 10 when they play at the Florida State Invitational. UConn takes on Western Illinois at 10:30 a.m. and host Florida State at 3:30 p.m.
