Softball Falls To Florida State 5-3

    TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 10, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team closed out the first day of action at the Florida State Invitational by falling to host Florida State, 5-3, in nine innings on Friday afternoon. The Huskies are now 4-6 on the season while Florida State improves to 14-8 overall.

    The Huskies got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third to open up the early lead. Doubles by sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) and freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewskbury, Mass.) knocked in freshmen Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) for the advantage to close out the inning.

    The score remained at 2-0 UConn before Florida State added one run in the top of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take the lead in extra innings. The Huskies
    tied the score again in the bottom of the eighth on a single by senior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.), but the Seminoles scored two runs to open the ninth inning for the victory.

    Taking the loss on the mound for the Huskies was freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.), who gave up seven hits in all nine innings of work. She also struck out eight in the loss. Tiffany McDonald had the win for Florida State.

    UConn will continue action at the Florida State Invitational on Saturday, March 11 when they take on Kent State at 12:30 p.m. Championship play brackets will be announced following that game.
