UConn Set to Participate in Hofstra Invitational

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – After grabbing an 8-3 victory over Michigan State on Sunday, the University of Connecticut softball team is back on the road for the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y. The Huskies will play four games over two days, beginning on Saturday, March 12 against St. John’s at 11 a.m. and Hofstra at 4 p.m. UConn will finish the tournament on Sunday after a 1:30 p.m. tilt with the Pride and a 4 p.m. finale against the Red Storm.

UConn (4-14) snapped a nine-game losing streak on Sunday behind a six-run, three-hit inning to take down the Spartans. Sophomore RHP Chelsea Eckert (1-7) picked up her first win of the 2016 season after tossing a complete game with three runs, six hits and three strikeouts. Junior Dominique Pinto delivered a three-run double for the Huskies in the third.

Connecticut is 15-23 all-time against Hofstra with the last meeting coming on Feb. 21, 2014 when the Huskies dropped a 7-3 decision in the opener of the Lead-Off Classic.

UConn and St. John’s have met a total of 78 times since 1982 and the Huskies lead the all-time series, 61-17. The last time the two teams faced off on the field was during the 2013 season, when both teams were members of the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies swept that year’s three-game series (6-5, 4-3, 7-2).

SS Lexi Gifford leads the American Athletic Conference with 54 assists while RHP Jill Stockley ranks sixth among the league’s pitchers behind a 2.30 ERA. OF Alyssa Gardea leads the team with a .280 batting average, 14 hits and seven RBIs through 18 games.
