SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Connecticut softball team plays its fourth regular season tournament of the season when it travels to San Diego, Calif. to participate in the 2015 San Diego Classic II on March 13-15. The team opens plays with a pair of games on Friday, March 13 against UNLV (12 p.m. ET) and Utah Valley (2:30 p.m. ET) before challenging BYU (2:30 p.m.) and New Mexico St. (7:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday. The Huskies round out weekend action with a 5 p.m. tilt against host San Diego on Sunday, March 15.
UConn (6-9) won two of five games at the 2015 Mizuno Classic, played on March 6-8 in Stillwater, Okla. Senior 3B Emily O'Donnell hit .571 with a pair of home runs and five RBI over the weekend, grabbing a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. O'Donnell and junior OF Alyssa Gardea each earned spots on the All-Tournament squad following the championship game on Sunday.
The tournament will mark the Huskies' first trip to California since the 2012 campaign when the team took part in the Bayer CropScience Classic in Fresno. Overall, Connecticut owns an 11-12 record when playing in the Golden State.
The Huskies are 2-3 all-time against the Rebels with the last meeting coming in the 1997 season opener. UConn sports a 1-1 record against both BYU and San Diego and owns a 2-0 all-time mark against New Mexico State. Friday's contest against the Wolverines will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Through 15 games, four Huskies are hitting above .300, led by O'Donnell (.370). Junior OF Alyson Ambler leads all Huskies with three home runs and nine RBI, while senior RHP Lauren Duggan has picked up four wins with three complete games.
On the national scale, freshman RHP Chelsea Eckert ranks sixth in the conference and 117th in the country with 6.9 strikeouts per seven innings.
Tickets for the San Diego Classic II are $10 per day or $25 for an All-Tournament Pass.
