CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (March 14) The University of Connecticut softball team took two losses out of hard-fought games in the first day of the Texas A & M Islander Bash by the Bay on Friday. The Huskies fall to 3-8 with the losses, as their opponents, Texas A & M Corpus Christi and Western Illinois improve to 13-10 and 9-12, respectively.
The hosting Islanders took twelve innings to tally their win over Connecticut. In the top of the twelfth, Texas A & M used two hits to score two runs to break the shutout and earn the victory. Rachel Mendez hit the game-winning double with two outs. UConn could not rally in the bottom of the inning, and took a loss in the first game of the tournament.
Both teams tallied five hits and one error in the game. Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) suffered the loss for the Huskies, striking out nine batters, while Sarah Pauly recorded the win, and eight strikeouts.
Western Illinois snuck past the Huskies, 2-1, in six and a half innings. The Leathernecks scored their first run in the bottom of the second as pinch runner Sammi Smith advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on an error by UConns catcher. The Huskies answered back, however in the fourth inning. Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) started the inning off with a single to the shortstop and later scored on Jen DAngelos (Wyomissing, PA) single up the middle.
Western scored the winning run the following inning on a wild pitch by relief pitcher Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, NY).
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) recorded the loss for UConn, while Lindsay Tasker earned the win.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, March 15 at the Texas A & M Islander Bash by the Bay.
