MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After a 3-1 weekend at the Hofstra Invitational, the University of Connecticut softball team begins its six-game week at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Charles Wade-John Lott Field.
UConn (7-15) scored 29 runs and put up 36 hits through four games over the weekend, which included splitting a pair with Hofstra and two wins over St. John’s. The Huskies also totaled five home runs during the tournament, with seniors Alyson Ambler and Heather Fyfe tallying two apiece. Senior SS Lexi Gifford hit .571 (8-for-14) for a team-high seven RBIs, six runs and a two-run homer over the weekend.
The Huskies sport a 3-0 all-time record against Coastal Carolina in a series dating back to the 1998 season. The two teams last met on March 20, 2004 when Connecticut came away with a 12-3 victory.
Coastal Carolina holds an 11-13 overall record and has grabbed nine of its wins at home. The Chanticleers are coming off a 3-1 win over Furman on Sunday. The squad is hitting .316 as a team through 24 games, led by Taty Forbes with a .478 batting average and 43 hits.
Through 22 games, the Huskies are hitting .235 with a .341 OBP and 18 extra-base hits. Gifford paces the team with a .317 batting average, 20 hits, 17 runs and five stolen bases. She is one of eight Huskies with at least 10 hits this season.
Following Tuesday’s tilt, UConn will conclude its Spring Break trip with a five-game series at the College of Charleston Tourney on March 17-19.
