    STORRS, Conn.-  The UConn softball team returns to action this weekend when the Huskies (8-6) head to New York to play in the Hofstra Invitational. Connecticut will face intrastate rival Central Connecticut (7-4) and the hosting Pride (7-8) with games beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

    The Huskies split day two of the Hofstra Invite where they started the day by blanking Maine, 8-0, and then were shutout by the Pride by the same score with both games ending in five innings. Connecticut moved to 6-10 on the season, while Hofstra is 5-12 and Maine sits with 5-19 mark.

    Towers Grand Slam Puts Huskies Past CCSU 8-2
    A grand slam by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) down the leftfield line in the fourth inning put the University of Connecticut softball team on top for good as it defeated Central Connecticut 8-2 on the road, Wednesday.

    The Huskies split day two of the Hofstra Invite where they started the day by blanking Maine, 8-0, and then were shutout by the Pride by the same score with both games ending in five innings. Connecticut moved to 6-10 on the season, while Hofstra is 5-12 and Maine sits with 5-19 mark.

    The Huskies are coming off a 13-day rest after taking part in three consecutive weekends of Florida tournaments where the team compiled an 8-6 mark to kick off the 2013 campaign. UConn has registered 6.8 hits per contest with Maddy Schiappa leading the pack with a .412 batting average as she has recorded team-bests of 21 hits and eight runs scored.

    Guiding the Huskies in the circle is senior Kiki Saveriano who owns a 6-1 record and a 1.28 ERA after nine appearances. Saveriano has struck out 43 batters and allowed only 36 hits in 49.1 innings. Also earning time in UConn’s pitching rotation is Lauren Duggan (0-2), Alyson Ambler (1-2) and Katelyn Callahan (1-1).

    The UConn senior class has been outstanding as Marissa Guches partnered with Saveriano in lifting the Huskies to a 3-2 record at the UCF Spring Fling as she totaled seven hits, four RBI and scored two runs. Guches is currently second on the team with a .356 batting average and owns a team-high eight RBI. Joining her classmates is senior Kim Silva who is batting .315 with a .447 slugging average.

    UConn has found great success against CCSU as the Huskies are 55-7 all-time against the Blue Devils, while the Pride own a 20-15 all-time mark over the Huskies.
