SAN DIEGO - The University of Connecticut softball team opens up midweek action with a pair of games against San Diego St. and Arizona set to be played at the SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. The Huskies square off against the Aztecs on Tuesday, March 17 at 9 p.m. ET before challenging the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
UConn (7-13) opened its 12-game West Coast trip with a 1-4 showing at the 2015 San Diego Classic II held on March 13-15 at the Santee Sportsplex. The Huskies grabbed a win, 3-2, over UNLV in Friday's tournament opener behind a complete-game, two-run effort from senior righty Lauren Duggan. The UConn pitching staff shined during the five-game stretch, allowing just 15 earned runs and a .267 batting average against.
Senior captain Emily O'Donnell has gotten off to a fast start in the 2015 campaign, ranking 11th in the conference in batting average (.350), third in slugging percentage (.617) and fourth in double (6). Outfielder Alyssa Gardea has put together a breakout junior campaign, hitting .321 to go along with a team-best 11 runs scored.
On the mound, Duggan is tied for eighth in the league with five wins, while freshman RHP Chelsea Eckert ranks third among all qualified pitchers with just 36 hits allowed in 10 appearances.
The Huskies are 0-1 all-time against Arizona and fell in both all-time meetings against San Diego St.
Following its midweek slate, the team will travel to Stockton, Calif. to compete in its fifth and final regular season tournament at the Louisville Slugger Invitational.
