MEMPHIS – After closing out its regular season tournament schedule with a 3-2 weekend, the University of Connecticut softball team opens conference play with a three-game series against Memphis on March 24-26 in Memphis, Tenn. The Huskies and Tigers will play at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday before rounding out the weekend with a 1 p.m. ET matchup on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.
UConn (10-18) ended its final regular season tournament with a 9-1 win over Eastern Michigan. Over the weekend, junior RHP Kayla Doty (2-1) tossed two complete-game victories, allowing just one run to go along with six strikeouts and three walks. Junior DH Dominique Pinto hit .417 over five games for eight RBIs, which included a three-run homer against Central Connecticut and a two-run home run against EMU. Thanks to their stellar performances, Doty and Pinto were placed on the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll on Monday.
Freshman 3B/INF Ally Hernandez had a breakout three-game weekend in which she tallied a .750 batting average with six hits, three RBIs and a pair of runs. In 20 appearances this season, she is hitting .538 for seven hits and seven runs.
Through 28 games, senior SS Lexi Gifford leads the team with a .296 batting average and is one of three Huskies with 20 or more hits thus far.
As a team, the Huskies rank second in the league behind a .970 fielding percentage.
Connecticut is 4-1 all-time against Memphis, with the inaugural meeting coming in the 2014 season. UConn owns a 7-5 all-time record against schools from the state of Tennessee, including wins in two of the last three contests.
Memphis enters the series with 16-15 overall record and will also be opening league play. Sophomore INF Brooke Lee and junior C Brittany Seale have been the Tiger’s most consistent players throughout the 2016 campaign. Lee tops the team with a .361 batting average and four home runs while Seale leads the squad in hits (33) and RBIs (25). In the circle, the Memphis staff owns a 4.39 team ERA with 116 strikeouts in 197.2 innings pitched.
