ORLANDO, Fla. - After five-straight regular season weekend tournaments, the University of Connecticut softball team opens conference play with a three-game series against No. 18 UCF on March 28-29 in Orlando, Fla. The Huskies and Knights will play a doubleheader at the UCF Softball Complex on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. before rounding out the weekend with a noon contest on Sunday.
UConn (10-17) is coming off a pair of wins at the 2015 Louisville Slugger Invitational, held in Stockton, Calif. from March 20-22. Freshman RHP Chelsea Eckert tossed a complete game against Pacific on Saturday, picking up her first collegiate win, while three different Huskies recorded multiple hit contests at the dish. Eckert got the nod again on Sunday and grabbed her second win in as many days after taking a no-hit bid into the fifth. Senior 3B Emily O'Donnell blasted a three-run home run on her way to a selection to a spot on the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll.
With a batting average of .349, O'Donnell ranks first on the team and 10th in the conference and also stands at No. 4 in the league with a .616 slugging percentage. On the hill, senior righty Lauren Duggan is tied for seventh in The American with seven victories, while Eckert is tied for third with two saves.
The Huskies are 1-7 all-time against the Knights including four losses in the 2015 campaign. UConn last topped their conference foes, 4-3, on March 2, 2013 in a regular season tournament played in Orlando, Fla. At 2-2 on the road, UConn has surpassed its road victory total from a season ago (1).
Since its opening season in 1975, Connecticut owns a 27-50 overall record against teams that hail from the Sunshine State.
Central Florida moved up a pair of spots in the weekly USA Today/Coaches poll, earning a total of 251 points. The Knights sport a 29-5 overall record and have wno 18 of 21 home games in the 2015 campaign.
