PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 29, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball split a doubleheader with Providence College Saturday in their BIG EAST opener. The Friars won the first game 6-0, but the Huskies came back with a 6-0 win of their own in game two. UConn is now 11-11 on the season, and 1-1 in the BIG EAST. Providence is 13-11-1 and 1-1.
Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) was the star on the mound during game two of the doubleheader as for her third straight start, she pitched a complete game shutout. She gave up only five hits, while striking out eight to improve her record to 4-6 on the year.
The Huskies needed Crossin to be sharp early, as the score was only 1-0 after five innings. Then Connecticut showed their power with three home runs in the last two innings. In the top of the sixth with two runners on, Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) hit her third homer of the season to put the Huskies up 4-0. The next batter, Julie Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) made it back-to-back shots when she hit her first career home run to make it 5-0. In the seventh, Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit her third home run of the year to close the scoring for UConn.
Towers finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ortega was 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, Providence was able to score one run in each of the next three innings of game one of the doubleheader to put themselves ahead of Connecticut. They broke the game open with a three run sixth inning to account for the 6-0 final score. Friars pitcher Danielle Bertolette was on top of her game, allowing only two UConn hits.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday when they host Central Connecticut at 3:30 p.m. at the Connecticut Softball Field. They will host Boston College on Wednesday, also at 3:30 p.m. at the Connecticut Softball Field.
