Storrs, Conn.- The University of Connecticut softball team will travel to South Bend, Indiana to face BIG EAST rival Notre Dame. The teams will battle out a three-game series, with the first two games on Saturday, March 31st beginning at noon. The final contest will be held on Sunday, April 1st and is set to begin at 11 a.m.
The Huskies are coming off an impressive shutout victory over No. 30 Boston University and will look to continue their current win streak to seven straight victories. During this stretch the Huskies have improved their record to 13-11 overall.
The Irish have had a strong start to the season going 13-10 and are undefeated at home thus far. Notre Dame will rely on its strong pitching staff as well as a well-balanced offense to combat the white-hot Huskies.
Leading the way for the Irish on the mound is sophomore righty Laura Winter. Winter has been the go-to pitcher this season for Notre Dame posting a 2.21 ERA and going 8-6 overall this year. To support Winter on the mound, the Irish will look to junior pitcher Jackie Bowe who also has had a strong showing and currently sports a 1.40 ERA.
The Irish offense has been outstanding this year lead by junior catcher Amy Buntin. Buntin has been able to keep a batting average of .364 combined with five homeruns and 24 RBIs. Also leading the way for the Irish offense are the likes of senior Dani Miller and senior Alexa Maldonado. Miller has played the infield exceptionally well while batting .357 and has posted 19 RBIs and six homeruns. Maldonado has dominated her position in the outfield and has contributed on offense. Maldonado is leading the team in on base percentage (.420) and has recorded 25 hits on the season.
During this streak of wins, UConn has had outstanding play from both sides of the plate. The team has gone undefeated in both conference play and home games.
The Huskies will look to senior Amy Vaughan to continue to lead the team on offense. Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) has had solid numbers throughout the beginning of the season, sporting a .392 batting average and has managed to rack up 28 RBI’s, while hitting an impressive 9 homeruns.
In addition to Vaughan’s commanding offensive presence, junior outfielder Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) has been an integral part of the Huskies outstanding run. Guches has batted .397 this season and has 21 RBI’s combined with five homeruns and an on base percentage of .450.
Taking the mound for the Huskies will be junior Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.), who has had a great start to the 2012 campaign maintaining a low 2.81 ERA and going 8-5 so far this season. Helping out Saveriano will be freshman hurler Lauren Duggan (Norwood,Mass.), who currently has a 3.34 ERA and an overall record of 4-4.
The Huskies look to improve to 16-11 by the end of the weekend and will enjoy a stretch of four home games upon their return.
