UConn 5, Seton Hall 4
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (April 1, 2007) - The University of Connecticut softball team split a doubleheader with Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon at Ivy Hill Park. The Huskies fell in game one 4-2 before fighting back to edge the Pirates 5-4 in game two.
UConn is 14-11 on the season with a 3-4 record in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall sits at 7-22 and 4-5 in conference play.
The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one after a triple followed by a home run. Things quieted down offensively until the fourth inning when UConn got on the board. Senior Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) got things started with a single to right field. She would then go onto score when sophomore Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) reached base on a fielder's choice.
Seton Hall added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth off a home run from Danielle Steinseifzer.
Senior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) came up big in the top of the seventh with a triple to right field. Freshman Caitlin Dombrowski (Delmar, N.Y.) then grounded out to shortstop which allowed Quan to cross the plate. However, it wasn't enough as the Pirates took game one 4-2.
Freshman Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) took the loss in the pitcher's circle allowing seven hits over 6.0 innings.
In game two, UConn wasted no time in getting on the board as Calcagno blasted a home run to take an early 1-0 lead. Seton Hall responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first to tie things up at 1-1.
The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the second for a 3-1 advantage, but the Huskies answered the call in the third. Sophomore Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) singled up the middle and then went onto steal second. Calcagno then singled to center, advancing to second on the throw, to put Truax on third. Sophomore Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) stepped up with a single of her own to left field to allow Truax to score at 3-2.
The Huskies tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth when freshman Lauren Cecchi (Simsbury, Conn.) doubled to drive in Dombrowski who was at second. Seton Hall again responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead at 4-3.
Sophomore Erin Burtner (Jefferson, Md.) led off in the top of the sixth with a double to left center. She then scored after a sacrifice fly by Calcagno for a tie score at 4-4.
Neuschwander got things started in the top of the seventh with a single to center. Sullivan came into pinch run for Neuschwander and stole second before advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Dombrowski popped up a sacrifice fly that allowed Sullivan to score what proved to be the game winner with UConn prevailing 5-4.
Senior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) got the win with a complete 7.0 innings of work with nine hits and four strikeouts.
UConn returns home for a single game against in-state foe Quinnipiac on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
