STORRS, Conn.- The UConn softball team returns to Burrill Family Field this weekend for its conference home opener when the Huskies take on Providence in a noon doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday. Connecticut enters the weekend with a 14-13 (1-2 BIG EAST) record, while PC is 10-17-1 (0-3 BE).
The Huskies, who won their 2012 league home opener over Villanova, were able to bounce back from an up-and-down weekend at Rutgers as they won 11-8 at Boston University on Wednesday afternoon. Connecticut owns a 59-20 all-time mark over the Friars and the two squads have not met since 2011 when they split a midweek doubleheader.
Senior Kim Silva leads the team with a .375 batting average and .575 slugging percentage as she is second on the team with 30 hits and has scored a team-best 15 runs. Having a breakout junior campaign is Maddy Schiappa who owns a team-high 35 hits, has scored 14 runs and is batting .347, while senior Marissa Guches boasts a .310 batting average, has 27 hits and a team-best 20 RBI.
Righty Kiki Saveriano continues to be the Huskies go-to pitcher and has proven why as she is 11-4 on the season in 101.2 innings pitched. The senior hurler, who has tallied three shutouts in 15 starts, owns a 1.86 ERA and has struck out 78 batters.
