TAMPA, Fla. – After missing out on a trio of games due to inclement weather, the University of Connecticut softball team is back on the road to face No. 25/23 USF in a three-game set on April 8-10. The American Athletic Conference rivals will play on Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. with Sunday’s finale set for 11 a.m.
UConn (13-21) dropped a hard-fought contest against UCF on Friday afternoon. RHP Kayla Doty gave up the game-winning run in the fifth, while the Huskies had three players with a hit in the outing. With last week’s doubleheader sweep of Bryant included, Doty went 1-1, surrendering a single earned run, six hits, one walk and struck out a pair to earn a spot on The American’s weekly honor roll. Senior SS Lexi Gifford joined her on the list after she hit .429 on the week for three hits, four RBI, a double and three-run homer.
Freshman INF Ally Hernandez leads the team with a .429 average in 24 appearances this season. Gifford has a .239 average with 23 runs, 29 hits, three home runs and 19 RBI to pace the squad. With 75 innings thrown, Doty holds a 2.15 ERA for a 4-3 record.
The defending conference champions, the Bulls had their 23-game win streak snapped when they lost their first conference game of the season to Houston. USF was able to bounce back with a doubleheader sweep over Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday. The Bulls are currently 33-10 overall and 5-1 in league play.
USF leads the conference in team batting average (.338), while junior OF Juli Weber tops the standings in batting average (.444), hits (60), runs (39) and doubles (12).
Last season, UConn and USF split the series after the third game was cancelled due to poor field conditions as the result of snow. The Huskies are 4-17 all-time against the Bulls.
