STORRS, Conn. (April 11) Bearing chilly weather conditions, the University of Connecticut softball team still managed to claim a non-league
series sweep of Long Island University, 5-1, 6-2, Wednesday evening at the UConn Softball Field in Storrs, Conn.
After a late start and an early score by LIU in the top of the third, five UConn runs were brought across the plate in the bottom of the same set with
Connecticut going through its entire batting order. Senior Jessica Yanosy (Milford, Conn.) began the Huskies' scoring drive sending an RBI
single to leftfield to bring in senior Sarah Sandford (Carlsbad, N.M.) for the tying run.
With the bases loaded and one out on the board, senior Abbie Link (Chalfont, Pa.) drilled a two-run single to centerfield to put Connecticut up 3-1.
Freshman Jessica Bigos (Fall River, Mass.) produced another two-run single for the 5-1 lead and the Huskies would never look back.
Taking her third win of the season, sophomore Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, Maine) pitched a complete game allowing only one run and striking
out three. Long Island's Shannon Payne took the loss to go to 13-6 on the year.
In the second game of the twinbill, doubles were a common occurrence by both UConn and LIU hitters. The Huskies took an early lead in the bottom
of the second frame on a Yanosy RBI double that drove in Sandford and sophomore Katie Kestranek (Manlius, N.Y.) for two. The visiting Blackbirds
answered back with a Alicia Ciccarello RBI double to knot the game at 2-2.
Connecticut came up with two consecutive two-run innings thereafter, to put the game away at 6-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the game was called due
to darkness. Yanosy, the leadoff hitter, went an impressive 5-for-8 for the day with two doubles, five RBIs and one run scored.
Junior Caryn Haskins (East Freetown, Mass.) picked up her second win of the season in 5.1 innings on the mound. She entered the game in relief of
senior Megan Biddle (Bear, Del.) and had three strikeouts.
UConn captured its fourth straight win for its longest winning streak of the 2001 season and improved to 13-18 overall. Long Island dropped to
