PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 15, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team was able to muster just one run in each of their games at Providence College on Saturday, falling in the first game 7-1 and 4-1 in the second.  The Huskies had nine hits on the afternoon and fall to 15-21 overall and 4-8 in the BIG EAST. The Friars are now 23-11-1 overall and 6-6 in the conference. UConn has now lost six consecutive games.

In game one, UConn's lone run came on a double by freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the bottom of the sixth inning. That double caused freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) to score after walking earlier in the inning. Sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) had advanced Truax to second with a single before Del Ponte came to the plate.

Taking the loss in the circle for UConn was junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.). She scattered 10 hits over four innings of work and struck out two batters to go to 7-10 on the season. Freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) pitched the final two innings for the Huskies, allowing just one hit.

Although the Huskies picked up the first run of the second game to open with the early lead, it was not enough as Providence answered back in the later innings for the victory.

The UConn run came on three singles in the top of the first inning. Truax opened with a single and she was followed by freshman Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.), who reached base on a sacrifice bunt. Gendron loaded the bases on a single to center field, but Truax was thrown out at the plate on a wild pitch for the first out of the inning. Senior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) singled with two outs to drive in Ortega and give the Huskies the early lead.

Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle for UConn, giving up six hits in six innings of work while striking out three batters.

The Huskies will be in action next on Tuesday, April 18 when they will host Boston University at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
